Our First Mission Field
On Sunday, April 14, 2024, a missionary from Kenya named Christiano, taught our Sunday school a lesson titled, “The Call.” He spoke to us about “the call” that one receives from God to accept him and to follow him. He shared that we are all called to missions whether through selling group health insurance, coaching T-ball or in the mission fields of Kenya. No matter where we are called – we are called to spread the gospel in our mission field. It was a great lesson, but one that I had heard before through my many years in church.

After the church service, my family invited Christiano to lunch. As we chatted, it was as if we were the only two people in the room. We spoke about his ministry, a discipleship program, his church, his family, and the dynamics between Kenyans and Americans.
I asked Christiano “What does a Tuesday morning look like in Kenya – in your town of Bomachoge, Kenya? Christiano detailed the daily process of his family collecting water for cleaning, cooking, and drinking. I did not consider this to be a significant part of his day and assumed that they just boiled the water. Christiano somberly stated that they cannot afford enough wood to boil drinking water and cook food, so they sacrifice their water. I was so perplexed. I thought to myself “You’re drinking dirty water? But you can get worms, you can get dysentery.” ….
